"தன்னை அறிதலே ஞானம்;
அனைத்திலும் இறைவனைக் காண்பதே பேரறிவு;
The following is a faithful English translation of the Tamil text, preserving its spiritual meaning, philosophical depth, devotional tone, and original structure.
The Teachings of Sage Bhrigu on Dharma in the Four Yugas
Among the great Maharishis who realised their true nature in the supreme radiance of the Absolute, Sage Bhrigu is revered as one who bestowed a lofty tradition of wisdom upon the world. As time changes, the nature of human society also changes. Consequently, the means of upholding Dharma must adapt to the needs of each Yuga. The wisdom that explains this truth is known as Yuga Dharma—the righteous way of life appropriate to each age.
In the Satya Yuga, the human mind was like a pure mirror. Desires, jealousy, deceit, and similar qualities were rare. During that age, austerity and meditation were regarded as the highest forms of Dharma. Human beings realised the Divine Truth within themselves. External rituals were few, while inner spiritual discipline was abundant. Since the mind was peaceful, no difficult methods were necessary to attain the Divine.
In the Treta Yuga, the presence of Dharma diminished to some extent. Differences began to emerge in human thoughts and actions. Consequently, yajnas, sacred fire rituals, charitable giving, and moral discipline became instruments for upholding Dharma. The understanding that a life devoted to the welfare of others, with reduced selfishness, was the highest form of living grew stronger. It was taught that human beings should purify themselves through sacrifice and selflessness.
In the Dvapara Yuga, Dharma declined further. The world functioned in a state where knowledge and ignorance existed side by side. During this age, temple worship, puja, vows, devotion, and religious observances gained importance. Recognising that they could not attain spiritual elevation entirely through their own efforts, human beings began seeking Divine Grace. Devotion that focused the mind upon the Divine and elevated one's consciousness came to be regarded as Dharma.
In the Kali Yuga, the human mind became restless and desires grew limitless. The pace of life increased, while mental peace diminished. Therefore, not everyone could undertake severe austerities or perform prolonged sacrificial rituals. Recognising this reality, the sages proclaimed a simpler Dharma suited to the Kali Yuga.
Speaking the truth, living with compassion, helping others, chanting the Divine Name, honouring one's parents, and showing love towards all living beings are the foremost Dharmic principles of the Kali Yuga.
From the perspective of Sage Bhrigu, Dharma is not merely a collection of rituals. It is a way of life that elevates a human being from an animal-like state of consciousness to a divine state of being.
Meditation was the Dharma of the Satya Yuga; sacrifice and selflessness were the Dharma of the Treta Yuga; devotion was the Dharma of the Dvapara Yuga; and compassion and remembrance of the Divine Name are the Dharma of the Kali Yuga.
Yet, underlying all these paths are four essential pillars: Truth, Love, Righteousness, and Self-Control.
Therefore, the essence of Sage Bhrigu's teachings on Yuga Dharma is this:
"Time may change, and the methods may change, but righteousness never changes. Whatever elevates a living being towards a higher state of existence is Dharma in every Yuga."
The Teachings of Sage Bhrigu on Yuga Dharma
A Summary and Philosophical Interpretation
Sage Bhrigu Maharishi, one of the Vedic sages, is associated in Puranic tradition with teachings on the Dharma that human beings should follow in accordance with the changing Yugas. This principle is known as Yuga Dharma.
The essence of this teaching points towards a single understanding:
Although time changes, the foundation of Dharma remains unchanged; what changes is the manner in which it is practised.
1. Dharma in the Satya Yuga — Purity and Meditation
In the Satya Yuga, human beings naturally existed in an elevated spiritual state.
- A state largely free from falsehood and deceit.
- Meditation as the principal form of Dharma.
- A life lived in harmony with nature.
- Very few desires.
The teaching attributed to Bhrigu:
"Mastering the mind was the complete Dharma of that age."
2. Dharma in the Treta Yuga — Sacred Sacrifice and Discipline
In the Treta Yuga, Dharma began to diminish slightly.
- Balance was maintained through yajnas, or sacred sacrificial rites.
- Moral conduct and self-discipline became important.
- The principles of royal Dharma, or the righteous duties of a ruler, took shape.
The teaching attributed to Bhrigu:
"A life without sacrifice and selflessness cannot safeguard Dharma."
3. Dharma in the Dvapara Yuga — Devotion and Ritual Worship
During this Yuga, Dharma declined further.
- Religious rituals gained importance.
- Devotional worship became more prominent.
- Knowledge and power became divided and manifested in differing degrees.
The teaching attributed to Bhrigu:
"Ritual alone is not Dharma; inner devotion is Dharma."
4. Dharma in the Kali Yuga — Remembrance of the Divine Name and Truth
The Kali Yuga is regarded as the present age.
- The mind is confused and restless, and desires are abundant.
- Sustained, direct meditation is difficult for many.
- A simple and accessible spiritual path is therefore necessary.
The teaching attributed to Bhrigu:
"In the Kali Yuga, Dharma consists of truth, compassion, and remembrance of the Divine Name."
The Central Principle — The Essence of Sage Bhrigu's Teaching
The ultimate philosophical principle of Yuga Dharma, as expressed through the teachings attributed to Sage Bhrigu, is:
"Although the Yuga changes, human beings must transform themselves; yet the purpose of Dharma never changes—it is always directed towards the elevation of the soul."
The Glory of Namasmarana
The Sacred Practice of Remembering the Divine Name
Namasmarana means living by remembering the sacred Name of the Divine in the mind, uttering it with the tongue, and establishing it firmly within the heart.
The Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, and devotional literature all extol Namasmarana as an accessible means of receiving Divine Grace in the Kali Yuga.
In the Kali Yuga, the mind wanders easily. Not everyone can undertake prolonged austerities, conduct difficult sacrificial rites, or remain established in deep yogic absorption. However, neither time nor place is an obstacle to remembering the Divine Name.
One may remember the Divine Name while walking, sitting, working, or preparing to sleep. For this reason, Namasmarana is regarded as one of the simplest yogic paths for the Kali Yuga.
The Divine Name is not merely a sound; it is a sacred vibration of Divine Grace. Just as touching fire brings warmth, contemplating the Divine Name purifies the mind.
Through continuous Namasmarana, mental distress diminishes, anger subsides, fear recedes, and faith grows stronger. Even when one has not seen the Divine directly, one can experience Divine Grace through the sacred Name.
In the devotional tradition, it is said:
"The Name itself is the Form;
the Name itself is Grace;
the Name itself is the Path;
the Name itself is the Goal."
When the Name of the Divine is uttered with sincere devotion, the mind becomes focused. When the mind becomes focused, thought is purified. When thought is purified, life itself becomes harmonious and elevated.
The Benefits of Namasmarana
- Mental peace is attained.
- Fear and anxiety are reduced.
- Negative thoughts gradually recede.
- Faith and self-confidence grow.
- Devotion and compassion increase.
- The heart becomes established in remembrance of the Divine.
- A righteous way of life arises naturally.
Whichever sacred Name one chooses, remembering it with sincere devotion is spiritually beneficial.
Sacred Names such as Om Namah Shivaya, Om Namo Narayanaya, Om Shakti, Muruga, Rama, and Krishna have been revered by generations of devotees.
This is the essential spiritual teaching for the Kali Yuga:
When you cannot undertake austerities, remember the Divine Name.
When you cannot perform a yajna, chant the Divine Name.
When the mind becomes disturbed, hold firmly to the Divine Name.
One who holds firmly to the Divine Name holds firmly to Divine Grace.
Om! Praise be to the glory of the Divine Name! Om!
Om! Praise be to the sacred Name that shows the path of devotion! Om!
Om! Praise be to Namasmarana, the divine protection of the Kali Yuga! Om!
Om! Praise be to the Supreme Name that liberates living beings! Om!
Bhrigu's Inner Nourishment
The Spiritual Meaning of Akha Anna
In the teachings of Sage Bhrigu, the term Anna, or food, does not refer merely to the nourishment consumed by the physical body. Thoughts, emotions, knowledge, and remembrance of the Divine that nourish the inner being are also understood as Akha Anna—the nourishment of the inner self.
Just as the body requires food, the soul also requires inner nourishment.
Such inner nourishment consists of:
- Noble thoughts.
- The teachings of enlightened sages.
- Reading sacred and ethical scriptures.
- Remembrance of the Divine Name.
- Compassion and love.
- A life rooted in truth.
Through these, the mind grows and matures.
Harsh words, falsehood, greed, anger, and jealousy are regarded as poisonous forms of inner food that contaminate the mind's nourishment. As a result, the mind becomes disturbed and the clarity of understanding diminishes.
From Bhrigu's perspective of wisdom:
"The food placed in the mouth nourishes the body;
the food placed in the mind nourishes life;
the food placed in the soul nourishes Divine Knowledge."
Therefore, just as we provide food for the body every day, we should also nourish the mind with noble thoughts, Namasmarana, and contemplation of wisdom. This is regarded as one of the important principles of Yuga Dharma.
The Path of Wisdom in Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma
Wisdom is not merely knowledge acquired from books. The path of wisdom is the journey towards discovering, through experience, the answers to questions such as:
"Who am I?"
"Why was I born?"
"What is lasting happiness?"
From the perspective of Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma, attaining wisdom in the Kali Yuga does not necessarily require going into a forest and undertaking severe austerities. Reading noble scriptures, listening to the teachings of enlightened sages, reflecting upon those teachings, and putting them into practice in daily life are the steps leading towards wisdom.
The Principal Disciplines of the Path of Wisdom
- Realising that the physical body is impermanent.
- Understanding that wealth, fame, and position are not eternal.
- Recognising the presence of Divine Light in all living beings.
- Striving to overcome ego, jealousy, anger, and greed.
- Cultivating truth, love, compassion, and equanimity.
- Purifying the mind through remembrance of the Divine Name.
Since the mind is restless in the Kali Yuga, Namasmarana is regarded as an accessible gateway to wisdom.
A mind that remembers Shiva, Narayana, Muruga, or Amma with devotion gradually becomes purified and moves towards the Light of Wisdom.
The essence of wisdom in Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma is:
"To know oneself is wisdom;
to behold the Divine in all things is supreme knowledge;
to live with love is the fruit of wisdom."
Therefore, the path of wisdom in the Kali Yuga does not mean abandoning the world and fleeing from it. Rather, it means living in the world while remaining established in truth, righteousness, remembrance of the Divine, and self-knowledge.
This is the Yuga Dharma that leads a human being towards the path of true spiritual wisdom.
The Dharma of Profession and Work in Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma
From the perspective of Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma, a profession is not merely a means of earning money; it is a righteous service.
The work performed by a human being should benefit others and contribute positively to society.
The Ethics of Work
Earning one's livelihood through honest labour is a noble form of Dharma. Accumulating wealth by deceiving others, speaking falsehoods, or engaging in unjust practices is contrary to Dharma.
Integrity must be maintained in one's profession. The quality of goods and services must not be misrepresented, measurements and weights must not be manipulated, and fair wages and reasonable prices must be upheld.
Love and humility should prevail in the workplace. Whether dealing with customers, workers, employers, or business partners, every person should be treated with humanity and respect.
A portion of the income earned through one's profession should be set aside for righteous deeds. Providing food for the hungry, helping the poor, and contributing to education and social welfare enhance the spiritual merit of one's work.
Actions that destroy another person's livelihood, adulteration, fraud, exploitation, and corruption are contrary to professional Dharma.
The teaching of Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma is:
"When there is integrity in labour, fairness in income, remembrance of the Divine in the mind, and compassion in one's actions, one's profession itself becomes austerity, and the workplace itself becomes a temple."
In the Kali Yuga, when a person carries out their profession according to righteous principles and regards it as service to the Divine, that work itself becomes a yajna, that work itself becomes worship, and that work itself becomes Yuga Dharma.
The Dharma of Family Life in Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma
In the teachings of Sage Bhrigu on Yuga Dharma, family life is regarded as a highly exalted form of Dharma.
Since the household is the foundation of human society, conducting family life according to righteous principles is considered equivalent to the worship of the Divine.
The Principal Duties of a Householder
1. Honouring One's Parents
Regard one's mother and father as worthy of reverence, treat them with respect, and care for them.
2. Harmony Between Husband and Wife
Conduct family life with truthfulness, love, and patience, respecting one another and maintaining mutual understanding.
3. Guiding Children Along the Right Path
Nurture education, discipline, righteousness, and faith in the Divine, helping children grow into responsible and virtuous members of society.
4. Honest Labour
Earn wealth through means that do not harm others, thereby safeguarding both the family and society.
5. Food Charity and Helping Others
Offer whatever assistance one can to the poor, the hungry, and those enduring hardship.
6. Hospitality
Welcome visitors into one's home with love, kindness, and hospitality.
7. Remembrance of the Divine
Do not forget the Divine while performing any duty. Remain steadfast in Namasmarana, prayer, and righteous actions.
8. Truthfulness and Justice
Avoid falsehood, deceit, and injustice, and live according to the path of truth.
From the perspective of Bhrigu's Yuga Dharma, in the Kali Yuga, a household life filled with love and righteousness is considered a superior form of spiritual discipline, even when compared with difficult sacrificial rites and severe austerities.
Conducting one's family life with discipline, remembering the Divine Name, and doing good for others are regarded as the highest expressions of Yuga Dharma for householders.
Praise be to the sacred feet of Sage Bhrigu Maharishi, the revered sage who proclaims the Dharma of the Yugas!
May his wisdom illuminate the path of righteousness in every age!
